Loaded heritage

The complexity of commemoration and remembrance

Heritage reminds us of what we did and who we are. But what if that past is very fraught and involved large-scale violence and untold suffering? Loaded heritage, such as genocidal violence during the Holocaust or the colonial exploitation of the African continent, challenges a society to learn coping with a difficult past. This lecture explores the complexities of commemoration and remembrance, what exactly heritage is, and how an ongoing learning engagement with fraught heritage can help to each other's views on history and current affairs better understand. Critically, we address how our handling of heritage can contribute to multiperspectivity and tolerance.
